Condition Notes

A matched pair of Spendor A2 floorstanders in excellent condition. The black ash veneer is clean and unmarked across all faces, with no chips to the edges or corners and no rub marks on the top surfaces. Drive units are unmarked, the cones are free of dents and the tweeter domes are perfect. The rear ports, binding posts and plinths are all in excellent order.

Supplied complete with the magnetic grilles, height-adjustable spike feet and original factory packaging.

The A2 is Spendor's compact floorstander, and it is the model that makes the most sense in an ordinary Australian living room. At 150 mm wide and a little over 750 mm tall it occupies barely more floor than a stand-mount, yet it gives you the one thing a stand-mount cannot: a cabinet with enough internal volume and a low enough port tuning to reach into the mid-thirties of hertz. The result is a speaker that plays a cello or a double bass with proper body rather than implying it.

Spendor build these in Hailsham, in the UK, and the engineering is characteristically unshowy. The 150 mm bass-mid driver uses Spendor's own EP77 polymer cone, developed for the flagship D-line and trickled down here - a material chosen for how cleanly it stops rather than how impressively it starts. Above 4.2 kHz a 22 mm soft dome tweeter takes over. The crossover between them is the part Spendor are quietly proud of: the A2 images with a precision and a stability that much more expensive speakers often miss, and voices sit exactly where the recording put them.

What the A2 asks for in return is a decent amplifier. At 85 dB sensitivity it is not a speaker you drive with a receiver's spare channels; give it 50 to 100 honest watts from a good integrated and it repays you with a sense of ease and scale that belies the cabinet size. It is also genuinely forgiving about placement, which is rare for a rear-ported design - the port is tuned gently enough that it will sit closer to a rear wall than most without the bass turning woolly.

At this price a pair of hand-built British floorstanders with this pedigree represents unusually good value. These are speakers people keep for a decade.
