Condition Notes

In excellent condition. The brushed black fascia is clean and unmarked, with no scratches around the disc tray or the control buttons and no wear to the gold lettering. The display window is clear, the tray runs smoothly and the chassis and rear panel are free of marks. Everything functions exactly as it should.

Supplied complete with the RR-D99 remote control, power cable and original factory packaging.

The CD14 MKII is the reason silver-disc playback refuses to die quietly. Rotel have been building CD players since the RCD-855 in 1989, and the 14 Series is where that experience is distilled into something sensibly priced - a full-width, properly engineered machine rather than a plastic transport in a thin box.

The heart of the MKII revision is a premium Texas Instruments 32-bit/384 kHz DAC, replacing the Wolfson converter of the original CD14. Around it Rotel rebuilt the power supply: separate, independently regulated supplies for the digital and analogue stages, with the disc motor controls isolated from the sensitive audio circuits altogether. That isolation is the part you actually hear - motor noise is one of the quiet corruptors of CD sound, and keeping it out of the analogue path is why this player sounds as clean and settled as it does.

Rotel also fitted an upgraded transport mechanism and a new controller chipset, and re-tuned what they call the critical acoustic components - the coupling capacitors in the output stage. The result is a player that is detailed without being analytical: it resolves the air around a voice and the decay at the end of a note, but it never turns a bright recording into a hard one.

Connection is straightforward: a fixed stereo RCA output into your amplifier, or a coaxial digital output if you would rather use your own DAC. There is also RS232 and a 12 V trigger input for integration into a controlled system. If you have a CD collection worth keeping, this is the level at which a player stops being a compromise.
