Condition Notes

This Marantz Cinema 40 came off our own demonstration floor and is in excellent condition. The metal front panel and sculpted side cheeks are clean with no notable marks, the porthole display and controls operate correctly, and the rear panel is immaculate with every speaker terminal, pre-out and socket unmarked.

It is complete: the RC-048SR remote, the Audyssey calibration microphone and stand, the aerials, the power cord and the documentation are all present, in the original carton. Nothing to source separately before you can run a full calibration. One only, at a substantial saving over the $5,500 RRP.

The Cinema 40 sits between the Cinema 50 and the flagship Cinema 30, and for most rooms it is the sensible stopping point. Nine channels of discrete Class A/B amplification at 125 watts each, with eleven channels of processing behind them, so you can run 9.1.4 directly or add a stereo amplifier for the full layout later.

It is built in Japan around Marantz HDAM modules and current feedback topology, the circuit blocks that come from the company's two-channel range. That is the reason a Cinema 40 handles music rather than merely decoding it, and the reason it is worth hearing against receivers with similar spec sheets and different ancestry.

Formats are complete: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced and 360 Reality Audio. Four independent subwoofer outputs let you distribute the bottom end across the room properly. Room correction is unusually generous for the price, with Audyssey MultEQ XT32 built in and Dirac Live supported, so you can start with one and move to the other without changing hardware.

All seven HDMI inputs pass 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz with VRR, ALLM and Quick Frame Transport, and there are three outputs so a projector and a television can both stay connected. Three zones, HEOS, AirPlay 2 and a moving-magnet phono input complete it.
