Lumagen Radiance Pro 4242 Video Processor

The 4242 is the 4240 with four inputs instead of two. That sounds like a small change; in practice it changes how the room is wired. With four inputs the Lumagen becomes the video switch, and each source goes straight into the processor rather than through the AV receiver first.

Why direct inputs matter

Receivers are built for audio. Their HDMI switching adds latency, occasionally mangles HDR metadata, and takes a second or two to re-sync on every source change. Feeding sources directly into the Lumagen gives you fast switching, per-input settings (a different tone-mapping profile for the Apple TV than for the disc player, for instance), and the audio-only output still sends sound to the receiver.

What it does for the picture

Identical processing to the rest of the Radiance Pro range: Dynamic Tone Mapping for HDR, NoRing scaling, per-pixel deinterlacing, automatic aspect-ratio handling with non-linear stretch and anamorphic support, true genlock, 3 ms game mode, and a 4913-point 3D LUT with 21-point greyscale for calibration. 12-bit 4:2:2 pipeline, HDMI 2.0 at 4K60, HDCP 2.3, Dolby LLDV compatible.

Who it suits

A dedicated cinema with three or four sources — streamer, disc player, console, media server — and one projector. It's the model we specify most often for a first serious room.
