This Denon AVC-X4800H came off our own demonstration floor and is in excellent condition. The brushed black fascia is clean with no notable marks, the factory feature sticker is still in place across the front, and the rear panel is immaculate with every speaker terminal, pre-out and socket unmarked.

It is complete: the RC-1252 remote, the Audyssey calibration microphone and stand, the aerials, the power cord and the documentation are all present, in the original carton. Nothing to source separately before you can run a full calibration. One only, at a substantial saving over the $4,299 RRP.

The X4800H is the model where the Denon range crosses a real line. Everything below it is assembled offshore; from here up the receivers are designed and built in Denon's own Japanese facilities and voiced by the Denon Sound Master. That shows in the processing as much as the build, with AL32 Processing Multichannel, a 32-bit D.D.S.C-HD digital section and a clock jitter reducer.

Nine channels at 125 watts with eleven channels of processing behind them means a 9.1.2 or 7.1.4 layout runs directly, and a stereo power amplifier on the pre-outs opens up the full 11-channel arrangement later without replacing the processor. Four independent subwoofer outputs let the bottom end be distributed rather than split.

The format list is complete, including the ones often missing at this price: Dolby Atmos and DTS:X of course, but also IMAX Enhanced, Auro-3D and 360 Reality Audio. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 is built in and the hardware is Dirac Live upgradable.

Seven HDMI inputs and three outputs handle 8K/60 and 4K/120 with VRR and ALLM, so a projector and a television can both stay connected and a console gets what it needs. Three zones, HEOS, AirPlay 2 and a moving-magnet phono input finish it.
