Fade to Black
A blacked-out dedicated cinema the whole family actually uses: ten reclining seats on two tiered rows, a wide cinemascope screen and a fibre-optic starfield overhead, engineered as a proper, light-controlled room rather than a screen bolted to a lounge.
The brief
The owners wanted the real thing: a dedicated cinema with a big, wide picture and room for the whole family to settle in, but finished and simple enough to use on a weeknight, not a gadget project. The goal was a single-purpose room where the picture, the sound and the seating all worked together.
The challenge
A true cinema needs total control of light and reflections. Every surface had to work for the picture and the sound: a fully blacked-out shell, low-reflectance finishes so nothing washes out the screen, acoustic treatment on the walls to keep dialogue clear and bass tight, and a tiered second row so every seat sees the screen cleanly.
The solution
We built the room end to end. A blacked-out, acoustically-treated shell with fabric-panelled walls and heavy carpet controls reflections and keeps the sound in the room. A wide cinemascope screen anchors the front wall, driven by a ceiling-mounted projector calibrated for the room. Ten powered leather recliners are set across two rows, with the rear row raised on a riser for clean sightlines. A fibre-optic starfield ceiling, dimmable downlights and warm wall sconces set the scene, and the whole room was measured and calibrated at handover so it performs the way it looks.
