A Step Up in Measurement Accuracy

The MiniDSP UMIK-2 Calibration Microphone is the second-generation USB measurement mic, and the one to choose when you want more than the UMIK-1 can give you. It adds a 32-bit ADC and adjustable gain inside the mic body, selectable sample rates from 44.1 to 192 kHz, and higher SPL handling, with each unit individually calibrated. Plug it into REW or Dirac Live and start measuring.

Why You'll Love It

  • A real step up from the UMIK-1. The onboard 32-bit ADC, software-adjustable gain and sample rates up to 192 kHz give you cleaner measurements with more headroom, and it handles up to 125 dB SPL for big rooms, home theatres and louder test tones. The UMIK-1 is fixed gain and a lower ceiling by comparison.
  • Calibrated to your exact unit. Each UMIK-2 has its own calibration file that you download from MiniDSP using the microphone's serial number, so your measurements reflect the true response of your room rather than a generic curve.
  • Works with the tools you already use. REW and Dirac Live recognise it instantly on Mac, Linux and Android, with an ASIO driver for Windows and iOS support via a USB camera adaptor.

Under the Hood

  • Reference capsule. A half-inch pre-polarised condenser on a 60 UNS thread, 120 dB SNR, housed in an aluminium body.
  • XMOS audio engine. A 500 MHz USB Audio Class 2 controller with a 32-bit ADC and up to 60 dB of software-controlled gain.
  • Flexible sample rates. 44.1 to 192 kHz selectable, so it fits whatever measurement or recording software you run.

CHT Insider Verdict

The UMIK-1 is all most people need to dial in a room, but the UMIK-2 is the better tool when you want more precision and flexibility. The adjustable gain, 32-bit ADC and 125 dB SPL ceiling make it more capable in larger rooms, home theatres and louder measurements, and the aluminium body plus included tripod, clamp and windscreen mean it is ready to work out of the box. If you calibrate often or want the most accurate result, it earns the extra spend over the UMIK-1.

Pro Tip: MiniDSP supplies two calibration files, both downloaded from their site using your mic's serial number. Use the 0-degree file and point the mic at the speaker for stereo or single-speaker measurements, and the 90-degree file pointed at the ceiling for multichannel and surround setups. Loading the right one is the difference between a good measurement and a great one.
