HDMI 2.0 - What do consumers need to know?

HDMI 2.0 is the newly released specification but consumers don’t need to panic as it is fully compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI specification. It appears that the main focus of this update to the HDMI Specification is 4K resolution video at higher frame rates than was previously possible, tho there is some nice additional features which have been added.

What are the main features of the new specification which will be supported on upcoming devices?

  • HDMI 2.0 has an increased bandwidth of 18Gbps, which allows for increased amount of data transfer.
  • 4k @ 50/60 (2160p) resolutions are supported for use with the latest Ultra Hi-Def televisions.
  • Up to 32 audio channels are available.
  • Higher fidelity audio is now supported with up to 1536kHz audio sample frequency.
  • The ability to deliver two different video streams to the same screen.
  • The ability to deliver multiple audio streams to multiple users simultaneously.
  • 21:9 video aspect ratio is now supported.
  • Video and Audio streams now have dynamic synchronisation.
  • The ability to control additional consumer electronic devices from the one access point.

Will consumers need to upgrade their HDMI Cables?
Now consumer need not worry as all these features will be supported by existing High Speed Hdmi Cables. So there is no need to throw out your existing HDMI cables as long as they are High Speed cables. If anyone is telling you that you will also need the latest HDMI 2.0 cable when you purchase a new television (which supports HDMI 2.0) it is really a good sign that you should walk out and take your business elsewhere.

Can my existing devices be updated to support HDMI 2.0?
This is unlikely for mainstream devices as the new specification would need hardware and/or firmware upgrades. Some manufacturers may offer an upgrade service on some of the higher end equipment. If this is the case you should check with the manufacturer directly.
