The NIC 550 is a naked version of our Metric 550 quadratic residue diffuser. This is a diffuser design that genuinely diffuses sound waves that collide with it. Phase differences created by the different but mathematically related well depths cause sound over a broad spectrum of frequencies to reflect off in varying directions. This effect adds a sense of spaciousness and a smooth sweet nature to the treated rooms acoustic signature. Employing the correct amount of broad response diffusion to a listening environment avoids the ‘sucked out’, overly dry effect using too much narrow band absorption creates.
The NIC 550 quadratic diffuser by Stereotech Australia offers perhaps the most affordable serious diffusion acoustic treatment available today. By offering it ‘naked’ without the relatively expensive ‘acoustic lens’ there is a small trade off in performance (very small) but a considerable saving in cost. The result is a more ‘pro’ look which may suit some users but there are number of ways of disguising their appearance. Acoustically transparent grille cloth material being one possibility.
The standard finish is now either satin white or black.
Paint finish is ‘standard grade’. This is NOT a fine furniture finish. Difficulty obtaining a smooth finish in the deeper wells is the key reason for the downgrade from the superb finish on our speaker stands.
This diffuser is crafted from Australian produced MDF and is finished in an Australian produced paint.
